At the Demon Mart: A Pair of Songs by The Ex-Bombers
This 7" features the songs “Firebird Woman” (from the book “24/7 Demon Mart (Dis)enchanted”) and “At the Demon Mart." This pair of delightfully twisted songs started in a parking lot in Lancaster, OH, found their way onto the pages of a best-selling book, and are now on The Ex-Bombers’only official full 7” record. The Ex-Bombers’ Ohio Fan Club President Sherri convinced D.M. Guay (the author of 24/7 Demon Mart) to see the pair on tour on a sweltering summer day in Lancaster, OH. After the show, they discussed a shared love of “The Kids in the Hall” over some Double Edge beers. Guay then told the pair about her book series and proposed that they write a song for the night manager of the Demon Mart (Kevin) who loves Ronnie James Dio… and who happens to be a cockroach. That was all the direction given. The result of the collaboration is wonderfully absurd demonic kitsch. The A-side “Firebird Woman” is a boogie rock screamer in the tradition of Brownsville Station and the Datsuns. While Kevin claims that Kevin and the Cockroaches recorded it in the 80s, this is a certified original rocker by The Ex-Bombers, with the dirtiest 8-string bass allowed by law, a greasy groove, and vocals bathed in tube Echoplex. The b-side is “At the Demon Mart” is the theme song to the series and it is maximum absurdity. Kids in the Hall style dialog over a walking bass line with a gang vocal punk tock chorus, it is the catchiest jingle ever written for a convenience store with an interdimensional portal to the netherworld. The songs are available on The Ex-Bombers’ only official full 7” record. The record comes in two varieties (pictured below): Demonic Black or Radioactive Glow in the Dark. Both were pressed in Ohio at Musicol, their jackets printed in California by Dorado, and include a printed lyric poster on fluorescent paper. The Glow in the Dark variant is limited to only 25 copies and includes a Demon Mart sticker and a hand-written list of all the items from the song “At the Demon Mart.” And because Denise is excellent at peer pressure it is also available for download on iTunes, Amazon, and directly from the band (send us whatever dollar amount through our tip jar, include your email address, and we will send you the WAV & mp3 files). Stay tuned as “Firebird Woman” will get a music video in the upcoming months with a life-sized diorama of the Demon Mart. It's ambitious and absurd, but it will be amazing. If you want to pay for some of the kraft paper and gaffer tape to make this diorama happen, consider donating: |
